TK Maxx St Mary's Axe - Review

A new TK Maxx in Olde London Town! Yes. Brand spanking new and about as central as you can get (right underneath the Gherkin, on St Mary's Axe) - when they kindly invited me to attend their celebrity preview, I was there like a shot. As ever, the concept of the store is to provide brands and designer labels at up to 60% off the RRP, however this store has an extra twist for those of you lucky enough to work or live within easy reach of the Liverpool St area; this is a City focused store - meaning no kid's clothes or household goods, and a much better selection of work, smart and partywear.

Channel 5 weather presenter Sian Welby.

The event itself was really enjoyable with celebrities a-plenty and of course a whole, untouched branch to shop for me to explore! I was very impressed by this new City concept, both from a workwear perspective and when looking for classic or vintage-style items. It really ensures that it's higher quality garments with strong designs which fill the rails.

Location

As I mentioned this is right under the Gherkin and an easy stroll from Liverpool St station. Perfect for lunchbreak or after-work shopping. I would also think it an ideal stop-off for shopping while you wait for a train or upon arrival in London.

Layout

If you imagine a sprawling, giant warehouse style when someone utters 'TK Maxx' then think again. This store is compact; it covers two floors. However, all the departments you would require for fashion shopping are there - as you enter, bags and accessories, GOLD collection, shoes and lingerie. Down the stairs is an extensive range of womenswear and menswear, including Mod Box, eveningwear and men's shoes and accessories. The rails are well spaced and well lit, making for a pleasant shopping experience.

Stock

As I mentioned before, it's the stock here that really made my day. Upon entering the shop you immediately find the Gold Label section with exquisite items from Chloe, Cavalli and Stella McCartney - due to the location, there is a focus on tailoring and smart separates. To the right are handbags and accessories; I had a really thorough browse because I have a slight, well, problem when it comes to handbaggage (the problem being I can't buy enough of 'em!) and I was pleased with what I saw; CK, Paul Costelloe and Gucci to name but a few examples, of course with a hefty discount. It was a similar story with the shoes, and I did spot some superb mark-downs, such as some lovely Kurt Geiger suede platforms at £39 (RRP £150) and red Dune ballet flats, perfect for work, at £34 (RRP £65).

However, the real strength in the stock was when I went down to the womenswear department. And I found the best TK Maxx bargain known to mankind. I kid you not; the best. I was innocently browsing through the knitwear looking for Ralph Lauren crew necks (one of my favourite classic looks. Yes, I do have classic looks I'll have you know!) when what should I spot but... a cape. The cape. Cashmere, angora and lambswool in heritage tweed with a ribbed collar and leather fastening. Amazing. And not only that; this reduction will have you gasping: it was £69... RRP £520! What a saving.

Yes, it is the bargain of the year.

Well, that's the thing... as I now own that cape, dear readers, you will just have to search out your own bargains next time you visit TK Maxx - I hope they are as bargainious as mine!

New TK Maxx: 33 St Mary's Axe, London, EC3A 8AA.

TK Maxx kindly gave me a gift card towards my purchases, however all opinions are 100% my own.
