Bog Standard Outfit Post

Some bloggers seem to have infinite clothing and fantasy style wonderful to behold, but most of us don't live like that. Sadly. We have these things called day jobs with practicalities and so forth. Reality. Rain, wind, bunions; they all add up.

But this doesn't mean everyday outfits have to be bland. I am rather strange, and enjoy adding a bit of character to my outfits both modern and vintage. Thus, this outfit came about; I wore it once thinking it would be warm and sensible, several people complimented me on it. Some picked up on the way it has a certain mid-century-explorer vibe (similar to the tough girl in a man's world outfit, I guess) and some just liked the faux fur boot.

It isn't super glamorous, it's not designed to make me look 'thin', or 'young'. It's just a practical, thrifty outfit made with thrifty items which I intend to wear again and again...value.

Ah, the usual grumpy blog face.
I softened it, but the expression's
still hard.

The jumper is thrifted (Topshop), about ten years ago. How's that for value - slightly faded, but not so much that you'd turn it down. It's nicely cut with a semi turtleneck and works wonderfully tucked into trousers (New Look sale, £8) or with a skirt. The jacket was free, something my sister didn't need when she went to work in Spain for a year. She's back now, but hasn't demanded it back so it's mine now. Serves her right for 'borrowing' on my Sindy doll back in the day. Oh yes, it all comes out now, doesn't it?

Singled out (as is always the way) for compliments, were my boots. My picked-up-on-a-whim, £5-in-the-sale, Primarni boots. Ah well, I've already worn them enough to bring them down to about 20p per wear and they're good sturdy boots... with faux fur. Got to love the faux fur.

Just as well I hoovered my husband hoovered
Look at that chunky Ray Mears style detailing
Having said that, my personal favourite is my belt. The whole ensemble (ooh long word) could be a bit too utilitarian for me if it weren't for my gold, bow shaped, diamante encrusted belt (again, a New Look sale find, £3 a couple of years back).

Don't be shocked by the rocks that I got.
Yup, a plain, sensible charity shop and sale outfit. It's comfy but it has character. This one's a keeper for me. Oh...I almost forgot. Being a sensible every day person, I have the most practical, down-to-earth manicure with nothing attached or fancy. Oh no no no.

Dunno how I managed, these
have lasted a week! Glued
on flowers and all!
What's your go-to outfit for busy day style?

  1. "Mid century explore vibe"!!! That is so apt! Love it!Love the colour of those pants especially!
I tell, you I am well on the way to developing bunions, and that will certainly affect my style when I have to wear orthopedic shoes....but that's the future!
If I really can't be farked,or am too busy to think,I'll probably wear a shift frock with black boots and cardi. But generally,I'm obsessed!

  2. Oh, I love it! Ray Mears never looked that good. I've got TopShop vests I bought in 1999, they don't make 'em like they used to. Love the trousers, boots and cap and lusting after that wall clock! xxx

  6. I never get up in time to put together an exciting outfit on a work day, but generally everything I wear is from a charity shop or cheapy sale. Those boots are rather spectacular and is that a flying jacket?

  7. I do wonder what they do in the day that they're able to run about town in 50s petticoats and heels, I'm too fond of my comfort for fancy day dressing (much as I might fantasise about it). My favourite piece is the jacket.

  8. Great look. I spend my work days on my feet, fixing stuff, fetching stuff and clearing up more stuff. I can't dress up and I don't wear anything vintage or it would get trashed. I'm usually in wide legged trousers, Forties style blouses from chazza shops and so on. Oh and flat shoes. Can't do heels all day with my angry bunion!!

  9. Great outfit! love the belt and the boots. I always struggle to find something different with a bit of character to wear that is also practical for everyday wear. I tend to wear lots of dresses but finding the right pair of shoes is the biggest problem. I have lots of tops from years ago that I still wear all the time, definitely agree they don't make them like they used to!

  11. I'm not very good at puling outfits together though I have the odd success. Really liked the way you pulled the whole outfit together and talked us through it. Plus I love the idea of pulling a 'blog face', excellent!

  12. I like this look a lot. It's such an appealing blend of subtly outdoorsy and girly glam (love the glittering bow!).

  13. Great outfit – and I'm grinning at the description of reality, rain, wind, bunions... too too true!! Mine includes tiredness which reveals why I end up wearing comfy stuff so much! (Because I'd like to go back to bed!!)

  14. Ha! I love this - particularly your writing style. I love reading fashion/style blogs (I've just joined the Ethical Fashion Bloggers forum myself too) but sometimes I get a bit bored of seeing samey outfit posts. This is a bit different, creative, inspiring and witty. Fab x
